HYPER-CONVERGED (HCI)
Hyper-converged Infrastructures (HCIs) have additional benefits compared to CIs. Instead of being hardware based and relying on building blocks, HCIs are software based, incorporate an additional virtualization layer, and scale in small nodes which include server, storage, and networking components, all in one chassis. The HCI software unifies the system and makes it simple to assign compute, memory and storage resources per virtual machine based on the needs of your application. This is a simpler and more flexible way for organizations to scale and support their data center infrastructures.
Depending on your selected vendor, you may simply add HCI software to the hardware of your choice, or you could a single vendor solution and deploy it all at once opting for hardware already configured and optimized with the HCI software.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use a converged or hyperconverged infrastructure?
To determine which one is a better fit for you, start by considering your need for flexibility, scalability, and your current IT skills. CI solutions are prepackaged, but also allow you to add specific capacity to pinpoint bottlenecks. For example, you can add lots of CPU and memory without additional storage. Or you can grow your storage capacity without adding CPU or memory. Converged Infrastructure can be a great fit for companies that are capable and accustomed to managing a traditional 3-tier architecture and simply want to accelerate the design and deployment phases while maximizing flexibility.
If you don’t foresee tremendous growth in your application portfolio, HC may be a fantastic option for you. HCI solutions come prepackaged with software including a hypervisor and virtualized management. It is very flexible as long as you are okay with scaling by nodes which must contain at least some compute, memory and storage. The new resources are automatically added to your existing pools when you deploy them, so it is a much faster deployment model. You should consider HCI if you need a lot of elasticity.
CI and HCI are not mutually exclusive. An HCI solution may compliment a CI if you have large data storage needs, but want a more nimble solution for DevOps or rapidly scaling applications. HCI is just an alternative approach way to manage your data center and while it has advantages, it is not necessarily the ‘superior’ option.
